Booze and the balance sheet
Article Abstract:
A company may suffer significant losses as a result of alcohol problems of its employees and executives. As a proof, 14 million work days are lost from alcohol-related illnesses alone, amounting to 800 million pounds sterling of wasted money. Survey shows that the total number of people who drink in excess of the recommended level, 14 units a week for women and 21 units for men, has already reached 7 million while another 1.5 million are reported to drink in harmful levels. A company should develop a policy which will be the basis of how employees with alcohol and drug problems can be dealt with accordingly. Already, some companies have taken measures to avoid such aproblem by ceasing operations of its drinking bars and applying a no-alcohol policy for every employee and executives. Employees are also encouraged to report personnel who may have developed bad drinking habits.
