Bottoms up for the pub market
Article Abstract:
Tenanted pubs are attracting interest from investors in the United Kingdom. Managed pubs were initially fashionable as new entrants enlivened the market by opening large pubs and obtaining discounts on beer. Grovebase Properties has acquired 1,428 pubs from Bass, and most of these are tenanted. Nomura bought Spring Inns and Inntrepreneur in Sep 1997 through Grand Pub Co, its subsidiary. The interest shown in tenanted pubs is due to the possibility of securitization of the pubs' revenues, which can bring major gains.

Article Abstract:
The Bank of England report into the fall of Barings, a merchant bank, concludes that there is no requirement for fundamental change to banking regulation. It criticises Barings directors, and internal and external auditors for ignoring warning signs, and it lays the ultimate blame with trader Nick Leeson who was active in concealing losses.
