Bubbling despite a flat market
Article Abstract:
Merrydown has moved back into profit for the half year to Sep 1999 following a loss for this period in 1998, despite a drop in turnover. The company is focusing on its Merrydown cider and Schloer grape drink. There is a long term rise in cider consumption in Britain, and Merrydown aims to develop its Merrydown Classic draught cider, as well as its Schloer drink in smaller bottles for impulse buys. The company should be able to increase its stake in the market as a result of brand extensions.

HP Bulmer
Article Abstract:
HP Bulmer is a British producer of cider which has distribution agreements covering 70% of pubs, a figure that could increase if Allied Domecq's pubs are include. This could happen if Punch acquires the Allied Domecq pubs, since Puch is a client of Bulmer. Bulmer is also expanding in the USmarket and has acquired Green Mountain Cidery. The company is also benefiting from the vigor of its marketing, and its major brand, Strongbow, could join the top 10 UK long drinks.
