Charming the Cobra
Article Abstract:
Cobra Beer Managing Dir Karan Bilimoria started his company with no capital in 1989 and has built it into a highly successful business enterprise in just nine years. The British-based Indian native saw a need for Indian beers in the UK when he could not find a British lager or ale that went well with Indian food. Since Indian food is extremely popular in his adopted country, Bilimoria recognized the potentially large market for imported bottled beer from India. He and his business partner Arjun Reddy developed their own line of beer, which they wanted to taste like a mixture of beer and ale, and sold the products themselves from the back of the car when they were refused by prospective distributions in the early days. Bilimoria is confident of his company's continued success in the UK and is now aspiring to become the first ever international Indian beer maker.

Giving Sanctuary to creative talent
Article Abstract:
Sanctuary Group started out as a management firm for bands in 1976 and has since grown into a publicly-traded company with music, television and facilities divisions. It was established by college friends Andy Taylor and Rod Smallwood as Smallwood Taylor Enterprises to manage the rock group Iron Maiden. Aside from negotiating record deals for the band, the company also came to provide other services to other bands. In the 1980s, Sanctuary Group began to grow by providing the bands they managed with related services, including financial advise, travel arrangements and merchandising. In the 1990s, the firm decided to expand into the intellectual property rights business by producing its own sound recordings, television programs and books. It financed its expansion by using venture capital and then later through flotation.

Tuned into the Bass note
Article Abstract:
Bass Finance Dir Richard North has had a very challenging career in finance. He first caught the media's attention in 1987 when he led Coopers & Lybrand's corporate finance team which helped Pilkington ward off a hostile takeover by conglomerate BTR. He was accused by BTR Chmn Owen Green of lacking objectivity. North was once again pushed into the limelight when he received a large bonus when he left his next employer, Burton, to join Bass. His present position, which he has held since 1994, seems to provide him with more excitement. Because Bass is a large group with businesses ranging from hotels to breweries to softdrinks, North says that his biggest challenge is keeping up with the dynamics of each line of business and assessing the best strategies for them.
