Back on the trail of windfalls
Article Abstract:
Mutuals have shed their status and offered windfalls to members in the United Kingdom. This has led carpetbaggers to invest in the remaining mutuals in the hope of gaining windfalls. Scottish Provident, MGM Assurance, and Scottish Life are seen as possible candidates for demutualization. Standard Life and Equitable Life are also mutual but are seen as unlikely to shed their status. Some mutuals place barriers to prevent an influx of carpetbaggers, such as living near the brach of the mutual.

The long, expensive wait for windfalls
Article Abstract:
UK savers seeking windfall bonuses to avoid a new account from Northern Rock, which would not qualify them from such a bonus. Savers may have to suffer low interest payments on funds in building society accounts in order to qualify for bonuses. They are unlikely to receive a sympathetic response if they complain to building societies, which are more concerned about the numbers abandoning their mutual status than they are about windfall seekers.
