Comment on DeYoung, Goldberg, and White
Article Abstract:
There is considerable evidence to arrive at the conclusion that the age and size of banks affect their small business lending practices. An analysis of data from a sample of banks that were 25 years or younger and with assets of less than $500 million during the period 1993-1996 confirms this observation. However, one drawback of this analysis is that the banks under study were founded in two different banking periods, thus, their lending policies may not necessarily be the same. Another problem with the study is its failure to examine why the banks were established in the first place.

Braving the bank
Article Abstract:
Government rules on banks' balance sheets and significant changes in the global economy have disabled banks from being the only provider of loans for businesses. However, a diverse group of alternative loan providers has emerged. They have been marketing short- and long-term debt and mezzanine funding. Lease financing and factoring have again become popular and labor-financed venture capital companies have been offering pure equity funds.

Beat the downturn blues
Article Abstract:
Companies should learn to advise their banks that they lack cash in order to identify the problem early and be able to rectify the situation. The banks will be placing greater pressure on their clients regarding invoice finance or factoring. The banks are anticipating very carefully for unexpected losses, violation of credit limits and too much of the company focused on a small assembly of suppliers.
