Comprehensive manual handling limits for lowering, pushing, pulling and carrying activities
Article Abstract:
Researchers developed models for manual pushing, pulling, lowering and carrying activities. The models should facilitate the development of load capacity limits, and employment of these limits should lower the rate of occupationally-related low-back problems. The researchers employed physiological criteria, biomechanical analysis and psychophysical data, and they incorporated task and personal factors into the model. Their results support W. Karwowski's hypothesis that biochemical and physiological stresses combine to form an overall measurement of psychophysical stress.

What is 'heavy'?
Article Abstract:
Employees are taught to estimated the heaviness of a load before it is handled, although there is limited information about what is perceived as a heavy load. A study undertook to estimate the amounts of load corresponding to various levels of load heaviness, using employees in the package delivery industry. The US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health defines the maximum load of 23 kg as 'somewhat heavy'. A moderate level of load heaviness, such as 14 kg, could be handled by 85% of the worker population.

Activity theory as a basis for the study of work
Article Abstract:
The evolution of activity theory, concepts and terminology relevant to practitioners, particularly in the field of ergonomics is described. This theory is easier to integrate with human information processing since it possesses rigorous sets of categories, notions, apparatus and well-defined units of analysis of activity.
