Contagion effects in the life insurance industry Spring and Summer 1991
Article Abstract:
An analysis of policyholder reaction to the life insurance industry insolvencies in the spring and summer of 1991 reveals that the failures did not cause the industry-wide policyholder panic. The financial situation of the companies were evaluated and an event study methodology was used to determine the detrimental effects of the insolvencies. State guarantee funds are a possible reason for the failure to attract policyholder panic, but in the event that the incident is ever repeated state funds may not be able to compensate and policy holder panic may occur.
