Czechoslovakia: the curtain rises on joint ventures
Article Abstract:
Czechoslovakia has encouraged joint ventures with foreign concerns for many years in order to remedy deficiencies in its command economy, but the state typically burdened the arrangements with significant restrictions so that it could maintain control over any enterprise. The relatively liberal 1988 Joint Ventures Act was passed by the former government to widen the opportunities for establishing joint ventures, but it did not allow for majority foreign ownership, setting the maximum foreign participation at 49%. The major political changes in Czechoslovakia in 1989 have created a better environment for joint ventures as the government is intent on attracting foreign capital, technology, and expertise to the country without increasing its foreign debt. The government has amended the Joint Ventures Act of 1988 to abolish restrictions that have made joint ventures unattractive. A summary of the Act is presented.
