DC plans in Japan a coming reality?
Article Abstract:
The Japanese Labor Ministry is seriously considering introducing defined contribution (DC) pension plans by the year 2000. The proposition, which is supported by various groups, such as the Liberal Democratic Party, the Ministry of Health, and the business sector, would address the changing work environment which no longer fully supports lifetime employment. The proposal would enable workers to avail of their cumulative benefits even after switching jobs. However, the Finance Ministry is concerned about the sources of financing to accomodate the DC introduction.

Article Abstract:
The significant growth in corporate bond issuances in Europe in the first half of 1999, which reached a total of $62.1 billion, is attributed by analysts to European companies' intention to issue euro-denominated debt and the increasing demand for more bank borrowing options. However, one of the disadvantages of the euro-denominated bond market is that many US companies do not comply with the Financial Accounting Standards Board's added balance sheet disclosure required under FAS 133.
