DNA patenting: The end of an era?
Article Abstract:
The upsurge in DNA-based drugs and vaccine patenting activity accelerated in parallel with the advance of the Human Genome project has engendered widespread speculation about the potential impact of DNA patents on innovation and access to healthcare. DNA patent applications are facing greater challenges to their validity and a significant proportion of granted patents are likely to be devalued by case law. Hence it is essential that the debates on the impact of DNA patents should take account of the wide divergence in numbers of granted patents between the US and other regions including the maturing nature of practice in the field.

Trust, patents and public perceptions: the governance of controversial biotechnology research
Article Abstract:
Emerging research indicates that the public has reservations about biotechnology patents and feels that industry involvement may compromise credibility and so there is need of industry involvement to assist in funding the research efforts and to ensure that positive outcomes of the research are turned into new developments in health care. Governance schemes such as public interest patent pool should be developed that recognize and protect the public interest.
