DVD's day is about to dawn
Article Abstract:
The DVD format is expected to replace compact discs (CDs) as consumers demand an ever-increasing amount of disc space. Although the CD format has been an immense success, with more than 10 billion CDs estimated to be in circulation, there has been growing dissatisfaction with these products because of their inability to accommodate space demands for such developments as multimedia. Consequently, various companies have been trying to develop a new high-density CD format. A number of companies developed 'Super CD' systems in 1995, but these were rejected by major computer companies which were pushing for a single, universal format. They ended up with a compromise format, the DVD. DVD, which initially stood for Digital Video Disc and later for Digital Versatile Disc and now simply refers to the disc format, is expected to penetrate 7% of all households by the end of the 20th century.

Primed for printer
Article Abstract:
Selection of an appropriate printer for office operations requires a simple guideline of factors to consider. Initially, a list of requirements should be prepared. This will be subsequently used in matching the company's needs with the available technology. The prices of printers may then be surveyed. However, the daily running costs of printers are more important than their market value.Consumables to be purchased, components to be replaced and servicing will ultimately determine the expenses incurred from the printers. Next, the features of the printers should be assessed. Print quality, versatility, noise level, size, typefaces and fonts, graphics capability, memory, color printing, and paper handling may be evaluated according to the requirement of the offices. Finally, the duty cycle of the printer, or the average print volume per month, must be noted.

European multimedia centre: ready when you are
Article Abstract:
The European Multimedia Center (EMC) offers support for UK firms considering adopting multimedia technology. Multimedia technology uses PCs to manipulate video, sound, text, and graphics to create video pictures with animation and stereophonic sound. The European multimedia market will grow to an estimated eight billion pounds sterling by the year 1994, according to the market research company Inteco. The EMC is an offshoot of the National Interactive Video Centre, a government concern that lost its backing due to the government's desire that it be privatized. Services the EMC offers to customers include an exhibition of materials that offers hands-on experience, courses and seminars targeting users, and an information service.
