Defense America-from the sea
Article Abstract:
The US's capacity to protect the nation and its foreign interests from the growing ballistic missile threat is expected to be significantly bolstered by the US Navy's programs, particularly with the service's launching of the newest SM-2 Block IVA Standard surface-to-air missile. Infrastructure for the SM-2 Block IVA have already been delivered, while the Aegis fleet air defense system of the Navy is being continuously upgraded to provide an early, worldwide defense against ballistic missile attack. However, the capability of the Navy to project the US's ballistic missile defense through the service's sea-based defenses is being hampered by the 1972 anti-ballistic missile (ABM) treaty. The ABM treaty, which was signed between US and the Soviet Union, prohibits the US from deploying strategic missile defense on the sea, thereby restricting the evolution of the Navy's Aegis systems and stunting the US's efforts to deploy a strategic defense worldwide.

British 'gators modernize
Article Abstract:
The changing emphasis of naval warfare has resulted in the need for a modern amphibious force that is capable of operating at areas that are far from their home bases. This has never been more apparent than in the deployment of the HMS Ocean and the members of the 45 Commando Group in a diaster relief mission off the coast of Central America. As the exercise proved, the capability of UK amphibious forces today is second only to that of the US.
