Demand analysis of the Pacific Coast pear industry
Article Abstract:
Farm-level demand for fresh and processed Bartlett pears and winter pears was analyzed using a simultaneous system with eight equations. Annual data collected between 1960 and 1989 were used to determine optimal allocations and to evaluate alternative scenario effects on prices and optimal allocation. Results indicated that canned pears and fresh Bartlett pears had become inferior goods. On the other hand, fresh winter pears were shown to have a positive response to income growth. Prompt responses have to be made by the industry to protect its profitability from expected production rises.
