Discriminability of load heaviness: implications for the psychophysical approach to manual lifting
Article Abstract:
An experimental study on load heaviness discriminability is reported. It involves 12 male college students and their perception-based weight classification of five containers with weights from five to 64 lbs. The procedure, which was repeated 28 times, is based on the psychophysical approach to establishing lifting capacities. The results indicate a high level correlation between discriminability error rate and the weight differential between two boxes next to each other.

Psychophysical capacity of industrial workers for lifting symmetrical and asymmetrical loads symmetrically and asymmetrically for 8 h work shifts
Article Abstract:
A database on the psychophysical lifting capacity of male and female material handlers for lifting asymmetrical and symmetrical loads symmetrically and asymmetrically while on an 8-hour work shift is presented. Developed from data on inexperienced and experienced workers, the data base was produced via two data conversion methods which modified current data on asymmetrical lifting for non-industrial workers and symmetrical lifting data for industrial workers.

An electromyographic analysis of seated and standing lifting tasks
Article Abstract:
An electromyographical investigation of back muscular activity when manually lifting a load from a sitting or standing position is presented. The low back, upper back, shoulder and abdominal muscles of six male subjects performing 12 varying static and dynamic lifts are examined. The results give proof of the greater stress on the back muscles from lifting activities in a sitting position.
