Downturn rubs magic off the tiger legend
Article Abstract:
Asian electronics exports have been affected by probems in western economies and this has in turn affected growth rates in emerging Asian economies. Structural problems have emerged and corruption, lack of democracy and too great a stress on capital investment are problems in some Asian economies. Rising wages can push up demand for imports and lead to current account deficits. Optimists point to growth levels for gross domestic product that are still high, though they have fallen. There are also major differences within the region since not all countries are at the same stage of development.

A lousy company by any other name
Article Abstract:
UK companies which choose to change their names may do so in order to rebrand, or to escape problems associated with the old name. Companies may find that costs are associated with changing a name, such as repainting vehicles. They may choose acronyms, as happened with British Telecom when it became BT. Name changes may benefit companies with problems associated with the old name more than companies seeking to improve their image by a name change. The stock market could assume a name change means the company is seeking to hide something.

Unravelling an enigma
Article Abstract:
Price-earnings ratios are used by analysts to compare the ability of companies to generate wealth. Investors seek companies with strong earning power, but this also means that such companies' share prices rise. The balance of the two factors is important for investors, Earnings also have to be sustainable rather than include exceptionals. Different periodicals assess earnings in different ways, and analysis is inexact, but investors cannot afford to ignore price-earnings ratios.
