Drawing: A line
Article Abstract:
There have been major changes in the life assurance industry over the past 40 years, but annuities, provided by life assurance companies, have remained largely unchanged. Purchases of pension annuities have doubled over the past five years, although there has been a dramatic fall in annuity rates, the appeal of annuities is decreasing and there is increased demand for drawdown. The main reason for purchase is that current rules call for the annuity to be bought no later than age 75, although there is pressure on the Revenue to relax this.

Assessing your options: As interest rates look set to continue falling, it is well worth considering the range of investment-linked annuities that are currently on offer
Article Abstract:
Conventional annuities are very secure and the choice of annuity should depend on age, health, life expectancy, financial flexibility and views on inherited wealth. Options can also be mixed to suit particular needs. With-profits annuities have the advantage of a guaranteed minimum income for life. Unit-linked annuities are more volatile. Phased retirement, where a pension fund is divided into several different plans can be a way for the partially retired to avoid the marginal tax rate.

What outcome for your income: when buying an annuity, should you maximise the income you get on day one or ensure that your income increases year on year? Pay for a guarantee or not?
Article Abstract:
The choice of annuity will affected the amount of income received both currently and in the future. Single life pays the highest income although it ceases on death, and a joint life will pay out until the client's death and another named person's death. Income is normaly paid monthly and in advance and can be paid for a set number of years. A level income option will pay more than an increasing income option in the first few years.
