EVA: nice figures, but what do they mean?

Article Abstract:

Economic value added approcahes to corporate performance are based on the notion that corporate operations should earn sums above the cost of capital if they are to create value. EVA is seen as a useful measure of share price performance and a way to forecast how shares will fare. EVA focuses on the rights of shareholders to a return for their investments and provides an alternative performance indicator to more common measures geared to slaes and profits, but EVA is not an infallible tool.
