Economic, efficient and effective; competitive today and tomorrow
Article Abstract:
UK-based Marconi Instruments makes a range of electronic equipment including printed circuit boards (PCBs). In order to achieve an efficient and economic manufacturing process the company has invested in an automated data capture and analysis system to replace an existing manual system in the PCB assembly plant. The i-Base system, developed by Marconi, can be used to provide accurate and immediate information and includes a paperless repair manual. The use of the system has allowed Marconi to reduce the cost of the assembly process and to increase the efficiency and accuracy of repairs.

Developing and improving the new product process at Marconi Instruments
Article Abstract:
UK-based Marconi Instruments develops and makes measuring and test equipment for the electronics industry, in areas such as microwave communications, telecoms and radiocommunications. Products include microwave test-sets, automatic printed circuit board testers and radio test-sets. Over 75% of Marconi's output is shipped abroad. In order that the company could respond to a fast-changing marketplace, it needed to reduce its time to market. This is being achieved through the development of a New Product process which is set to reduce development times from 4 years to 2-3 years.

Infra-red materials activities at GEC-Marconi Infra-Red Limited: Part 1 - bulk growth techniques
Article Abstract:
Cadmium mercury telluride (CMT) is now the foremost infra-red detecting material, although GEC-Marconi Infra-Red has produced a number of other infra-red detecting materials since it first embarked on work in this area in around 1965. It has been possible to develop a wide range of assessment techniques to characterise the compositional, electrical and structural properties of these materials. Work at the company has included Bridgman growth of CMT, which prompts an improvement in radial compositional variations and give good axial uniformity.
