Elders' battle for S & N
Article Abstract:
Australia's Elders IXL Ltd failed to take over Scottish & Newcastle (S & N) Breweries, due largely to negative perceptions on behalf of the Scottish Monopolies and Mergers Commission. Despite success in presenting their case to the shareholders, Elders lost out to S & N management when its aggressive scheme to acquire S & N shares in the open market was revealed. The cost of the S & N defense was measured in the millions of pounds, and the cost of the failed take over attempt was considerable greater, in view of the estimated 50 million pounds sterling loss which Elders will incur in the forced disposal of their S & N shares.
