Entrusted with the environment
Article Abstract:
Great Britain's National Trust has 1,735,000 members, 600,000 acres under its control, and an annual income of 54 million pounds sterling. Finance director Ian Bollom says that the Trust is shifting its emphasis towards preserving parts of the countryside. The Trust finds itself working under increasingly tight income restraints due to the great expense of maintaining countryside and a reduction in UK government financial support. The Trust employed 4,0000 Manpower Services Commission (MSC) covered by government grants, but the the MSC has been abolished. The Trust has been only 4000 places in the Employment Training Scheme. In addition, almost 90% of the Trust's assets are held inalienably and are a drain on resources. The Trust is increasing its subscription rate on Jan 1, 1990, and it is investigating ways to raise revenue through savings-linked affinity cards and by offering members investment opportunities in environmentally progressive companies through their unit trusts.

Article Abstract:
Local area networks (LANs) offer organizations the ability to simultaneously share data and personal computer equipment in a multi-user environment. The LANs are based on a distributed approach to computing in which a central processor controls the traffic and access to shared data and applications while personal computers are used to handle applications processing. LANS offer organizations many advantages including: access to mini and mainframe computers; greater system control; and support for multi-user applications.
