Winning ways with a balanced scorecard
Article Abstract:
The balanced scorecard can be used by companies to measure their performance along a number of dimensions. Instead of assessing only the financial performance of a company, the balanced scorecard also looks at several other strategically relevant variables, including its organizational innovation, customer service, human resources management, supplier relationships and environmental policy. Robert Kaplan and David Norton, who introduced this approach, advised companies to consider other factors if they are strategically important. They also recommended that the design of the scorecard be revised regularly in accordance with shifts in corporate strategy. The benefit of the balanced scorecard is that it reflects the diversity of strategic goals and prevents management from overlooking certain dimensions which may affect firm performance.

Business on the box: future perfect
Article Abstract:
Business coverage on UK television has been expanding in 1989, and now includes programs completely devoted to business coverage, including BBC2's The Money Programme, Channel 4's The Business Programme, and Thames' The City Programme. The Business Programme's editor Diarmuid Jeffreys states that business television viewers fall into three categories: the City or business professional; Midlands businesses employing between 100 to 150 people; and sophisticated private investors. The accounting profession lacks a history of self-promotion, but must assess the possibilities offered by business television and the part they can play in influencing programming agenda.
