Erbium-doped fibre amplifiers
Article Abstract:
Two erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) pumped by semiconductor laser diodes in the 1480nm band have been produced. The EDFAs were used as a power amplifier and preamplifier, with the power amplifier having over +15dBm saturated signal output power and about 40dB small-signal gain at 1559nm. The preamplifier had 4.5dB noise figure and about 30dB net small-signal gain. The development of a proprietary splicing process also contributed to amplifier performance enhancement, with splice losses reduced between standard single-mode and erbium-doped fibre to under 0.1dB from 1.8dB. The splicing process also allowed a preamplifier to be built with a noise figure of 6dB.

Coherent multichannel communications for high capacity reconfigurable networks
Article Abstract:
Hundreds of high bandwidth channels can be transmitted on a single mode optical fibre through the use of coherent detection to provide the best optical communications system. Costly high-speed network switching matrices are not required as channel selection is carried out at the receiver. The requirements and principles of coherent multichannel communication technology are provided, with focus on the RACE 1010 coherent multichannel communications demonstration system. Possible technology applications are considered, with optoelectronic integrated circuit technology development found to be vital for uses demanding technical solutions that are cost competitive.

Advances in microwave optoelectronics
Article Abstract:
GEC-Marconi has developed high-linearity and low-noise microwave optoelectronics components. Transmitter components are examined, including external modulation, laser modulation, transmitter integration and modulator linearization. Link applications include broadband signal processing and phased-array beamforming and distribution. Potential applications include RF signal processing and phased array antennas. Microwave optoelectronics developments now allow very broadband signals to be transmitted with sufficient fidelity, with optoelectronics also expected to be more widely used in the capture, manipulation and generation of ultra-fast RF waveforms.
