Tameside, a borough in Greater Manchester, England, faces a challenge of developing new employment as old industries shed jobs. Gallaher, a cigarette producer, has announced the closure of a plant in Tameside, and has been the largest employer from the private sector. Tameside aims to balance business and community needs and to aid the long-term unemployed to find work. The Tame Valley Partnership is involved in areas such as access to education and improving the environment.

TV stations suffer an identity crisis

Granada Television has roots in Manchester, England, while BBC TV North is a public sector body which is seeking to develop regional roots. Granada Television is seeking to expand away from its regional base, and acquired London Weekend Television in 1994. BBC TV North was set up from the North East and North West regional services of the British Broadcasting Corp. BBC TV North and Granada are responsible for over 1,800 hours annual network TV.

EMAP predominated in the market of north west England, and owns Gold and Key 103, both of which operate in Manchester. Kiss 102 is an independent station offering dance music. Fortune operates on medium wave and has suffered from weak programming. Asian Sound Radio will begin broadcasting from 1996.
