Establishing ergonomics in the People's Republic of China
Article Abstract:
The study and teaching of ergonomics is on the increse in China. But only a small part of the population is participating in this. There is still a lot to be done. The Chinese Ergonomic Society is a member of the International Ergonomics Association now but international exchange should be enhanced so the association and its members can play a bigger part in international activities and the standard of ergonomics can be raised.

Forty years of IEA: some reflections on the evolution of ergonomics
Article Abstract:
International Ergonomics Assn (IEA) Pres M.G. Helander's address during the IEA's 1997 conference in Tampere, Finland, focused on the development and goals of ergonomics. He defines ergonomics as a science focusing on the design of systems for human activity. He cited the changes brought about by computers on ergonomics and says that the three main goals of ergonomics are safety, productivity and operator satisfaction.

An outline of the main developments in the history of the Ergonomics Society (ES) during the period 1949-1999 is presented in chronological order. Various issues such as growth and influence of the ES, external relations and publications, key individuals and institutions, influence on government and other bodies and image and identity are focused upon, while also considering the outstanding challenges for the future.
