Ethical investors kept in the dark
Article Abstract:
Ethical unit trusts account for over 400 billion pounds sterling of investment but there is a lack of clarity as to what constitutes an ethical investment. Ethical unit trusts may invest in companies retailing cosmetics tested on animals. Investors should examine the criteria of ethical unit trusts. UK holdings of trusts are monitored by Eiris, but this does not cover investments outside the UK. Additional information can be obtained for a fee. Some ethical funds have performed very well in terms of a return for investors.

Investing on principle could be profitable
Article Abstract:
Ethical investments are increasingly popular in the UK, and large companies can be affected by protests over environmental issues, as is shown by the case of Shell. There is some 900 million pounds sterling invested in ethical funds in the UK. Optimists see these companies as proactive so likely to perform well, while pessimists argue that some strong and stable performers are excluded. There is no standardization as to what is an ethical investment and investors need to ascertain the criteria used by companies.

When green issues are not black and white
Article Abstract:
The issue of what constitutes an ehtical investment is not always clear cut. There may be environmental advantages in building a new road which eases traffic congestion in small towns, but roads can also attract more traffic. Some funds will not invest in mining companies since they may destroy the landscape, while others see them as valuable employers. Ethical funds publish criteria for investment and investors should assess which set of criteria best matches their own.
