Lucas left in the lurch
Article Abstract:
George Simpson will leave Lucas to become managing director of GEC. This could hit Lucas which faces tough conditions in the market for automobile supplies. Simpson will also have a difficult task at GEC, where Lord Weinstock will continue as chairman emeritus. GEC's share prices has dropped and this is seen as a comment on lack of a complete break with the past. Lucas may have to set up alliances since it is not large enough to compete effectively in a tougher market, and does not have enough funds for a major acquisition.

Where are they now?
Article Abstract:
T and N and Quicks are both companies from Manchester, England which were surveyed in 1987. T and N aimed to return to profitability and reduce its involvement in asbestos. The company has seen a drop in profit in 1996, and has ended its involvement in asbestos, selling activities in Zimbabwe. Quicks has expanded from the north west of England to other parts of the UK and faces pressure on margins like most UK motor vehicle dealers. The company's parts and services operations have fared well.

UPF: German leap
Article Abstract:
UPF is a producer of car chassis which has acquired a German car parts producer called Bellino. Bellino has suffered financial problems and a loss of senior staff as well as sales, so will not bring in a profit for a half year at least. Bellino is likely to see a recovery and will give export possibilities to UPF. There will be some challenges in imposing control of management in this acquisition by a small firm where a foreign language is involved, but there are also benefits.
