Article Abstract:
The Executive Information Center prototype designed by the Dictaphone Industrial Design Group of Dictaphone Corp won a gold award in the concepts category of the 1992 I.D. Annual design review. The prototype is a desktop telephone/computer that has its own 'communications tower.' The novel geometric forms of the various components, which include heavy ball-joint connections for stability and a full-color transparent display, were praised for their sculptural beauty.

End of the Silk Road

A report describes how an Italian silk-weaving company recycles its surplus silk at the end of a production run and converts the material into new furnishings and fashion fabrics. This successful 'concept store' called La Tessitura, which sells fashions and accessories from scraps, is the extraordinary outcome of the reconstruction of a 19th century textile factory in Como, Italy.

Zebra, a bar-code printer manufacturer, in 2002 wanted a new machine that was smaller and lighter than its industrial size models and thus designers from Gravity Tank, a Chicago-based consulting firm, hosted a group exercise. Half a dozen prototypes repositioned ribbon supplies, media rolls, and other elements to make them more accessible.
