Factors influencing expansion and contraction decisions by Illinois agribusiness firms
Article Abstract:
Agribusiness companies in Illinois were surveyed to identify the factors that influence contraction or expansion decisions in such companies. The results showed that factors related to perceived market conditions had the most positive effects on expansion and the most negative effects on contraction. Workers' compensation laws, insurance costs and other factors that are more directly under state control had the most negative effects on expansion. State development incentives did not significantly affect expansion or contraction.

Dynamic relationships between agribusiness sales and research
Article Abstract:
A study was done to determine if there is a dynamic relationship between agribusiness sales and research. Agribusiness sales are used to fund private sector research and any sudden changes in sales must also have an effect on the expenses incurred in research. Vector autoregression analysis of panel data for chemicals, machinery and seed revealed a statistically significant relationship between the two. It is suggested that this relationship be taken into account in public and private research policies.

Computer-based scenario modeling: application to swine industry
Article Abstract:
Weaknesses were noted with regards to the applicability of computer-based scenario modeling (CBSM) in agribusiness research and strategic planning. Utilization of a prototypical model of the swine industry revealed that CBSM is weak when it comes to model specification and analysis of complex interactions occuring in the model. CBSM's weakness in analyzing complex interactions results due to lack of statistical tests and operational routines.
