Farmers' commitment to continued use of the late spring soil nitrogen test

Article Abstract:

A survey was conducted among Iowa farmers to identify the factors that correlate with the use of the soil nitrogen test, N-Trak kit. The variables included perception of technological utility, environmental concerns and personal and social characteristics of the farmers. Analyses showed that the farmers' perception of technological usefulness and tangible benefits such as reduced cost and higher income, play the most important role in their decision to use the kit. Environmental issues such as water quality and personal characteristics of the farmer are of less significance.

A farmer-centered approach to developing information for soil resource management: the Illinois soil quality initiative

Article Abstract:

The Illinois Soil Quality Initiative (ISQI) is a cooperative effort between farmers, farm managers, researchers and conservation professionals that aims to promote the long-term conservation of soil resources. Its primary aim is to develop accurate, practical and meaningful soil quality measures and other assessment methods that farmers and farm managers can use in making soil and farm management decisions. The ISQI project and its results after the first year of implementation are evaluated and discussed.
