Fast-rise brake lamps as a collision-prevention device
Article Abstract:
Reduction of brake lamp's response time in relation to effective stopping distance is investigated. Brake lamps serve as warnings for decelerating vehicles ahead. Conventional tungsten-filament lamps take 250 ms to achieve full radiance and can cause a delayed alarm for the driver. A conventional bulb coupled with continuous preheating of filament at 2 V and a short undervoltage at brake time speeds up warning signals to about 145 ms. Effective stopping distances and reductions in reactions of prolonged reaction times are calculated.

Effects of turn-signal colour on reaction times to brake signals
Article Abstract:
Yellow turn signals produce shorter reaction times to brake signals as compared to red turn signals. Younger subjects perform better than older subjects in case of red turn signals as red signals are a more demanding stimuli than yellow turn signals. The yellow turn signals are better than the red turn signals even if there is no spatial separation between the brake and turn signal lamps. The results of the study indicate the existence of age-related problems in divided attention tasks.

Intelligent vehicle highway systems: a call for user-centered design
Article Abstract:
The promising arena of Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) is viewed from the psychological vantage point. A user-centered approach is the optimum way to use this technology. It begins with the user's capabilities and the system's intended purpose to predict and avoid operational difficulties. User-centred IVHS is exemplified by laser systems that audibly alarms motorist who starts a risky lane-change, infrared video systems and retroreflected markings for pedestrians at night.
