Fewer computerized return processors offering increased services for practitioners
Article Abstract:
Accountants selecting a tax service bureau in the batch processing field should consider such factors as: average price of a return in the previous year; maximum price of a return; and cost and availability of supporting materials. On-line systems place a computer terminal and keyboard in an accountant's office for the purpose of directly transmitting data to service company. This offers the advantages of: reducing the turnaround time for processing returns; allowing accountants to make alternate calculations on-line to achieve maximum tax savings; and allowing the accounting firm to retain in-house control. A list of firms supplying support for non-individual forms, state partnership returns, state corporate returns, state fiduciary returns, and on-line systems , and corporate on-line systems lists is presented. Companies offering on-line batch processing profiled include: AccuTax, CCH Computax, and SCS/Compute Inc.

Increased number of products offered by computerized batch and on-line processors
Article Abstract:
The results of Taxation for Accountants magazine's twenty-second annual survey of computerized tax return processing services are presented. The number of tax return processing services has declined as firms have merged or gone out of business, but the number and sophistication of processing products has increased. The product categories surveyed include batch processing by service bureaus, on-line processing services, and software for processing tax forms. The names and addresses of companies offering processing products and services are provided, as are the costs and descriptions of services offered. Services are offered for federal corporate, state partnerships, state corporate, and fiduciary tax returns, as well as individual tax returns.
