Fig-leaf for GEC chief
Article Abstract:
GEC has amended a bonus scheme for its managing director, George Simpson after pressure from investors. Simpson is eligible for two types of bonus. One type relates to an employee share plan which other GEC directors share and which initially had no performance criteria. A performance criteria has since been imposed. The second type of scheme is designed exclusively for Simpson and will pay as much as 1 million pounds sterling if the company's share price goes up by 42%. This can occur without GEC performing strongly, and the amended package falls short of best practice.

Money spinners
Article Abstract:
Some UK companies achieve good profit levels as a proportion of revenue. These companies include Automotive Precision, Glaxo-Wellcome and Vitec. Companies can benefit from high profit margins if they offer a unique product and are able to do their job well. Products are sometimes rented rather than sold such as rentals of clocking-on machines by Blick. Earnings growth is more important for investors than high profit margins, but companies with high margins tend to be well-managed so tend to be safe investments.

Success, in all its forms
Article Abstract:
There are a number of techniques which investors can follow. Some place emphasis on dividends, such as John Neff. Others, such as Jim Rogers, are concerned about major trends. John Templeton invested in US companies expecting their value to be boosted by the 1939-1945 war, and his investment brought good returns. John Train has written about these investors in two books called The New Money Masters, and The Money Masters. Train does not include chartists in his works since he does not favor such techniques.
