Finance packages take to the Internet
Article Abstract:
A growing number of software developers are starting to act on their belief that commerce through the Internet will grow significantly in the coming years. Some companies are already planning Internet-enabled financial and 'enterprise' software, which would facilitate 'self-service' financial transactions. These applications would allow companies to shift the responsibility for some finance-related tasks, such as the capture and approval of expense claims, purchase orders and invoices, to end users. This would help reduce paper work while allowing the finance function to serve as management's true business partners. Other companies that are still far from developing their own Web-enabling products are nonetheless considering ways of providing software packages with some kind of Internet capability.

Article Abstract:
Speech recognition is one of the most important innovations in computer technology. Voice input programs enable computers to recognize and respond to verbal commands conveyed by continuous speech rather than words or phrases delivered one at a time with gaps in between. The leading products available in the market offer a fairly comprehensive vocabulary and allow users to expand the vocabulary by introducing new words and names specific to their business. Many of these products also interface with other Windows applications, thus facilitating the input of memos, letters, reports, electronic mail and other types of text through voice commands. The most notable products available are IBM's ViaVoice 98, Dragon System's NaturallySpeaking and Lernout and Hauspies' Voice Express.

Advanced-level spreadsheets
Article Abstract:
Advanced-level electronic spreadsheets offer accountants enhanced support for financial planning and forecasting. New electronic spreadsheet packages allow accountants to juxtapose multiple spreadsheets and give them the ability to manipulate several spreadsheets simultaneously. Spreadsheet users can now work off of shared databases in which the main database can be updated by users. Windowing systems provide accountants with the ability to transfer data from databases to the spreadsheet. The new spreadsheets have overcome the limitations of previous spreadsheets, particularly in the area of memory. A new spreadsheet, Microsoft's Excel, allows access of up to 64 megabytes of memory and offers real-time update facilities.
