Financial performance and survival of multinational corporations in China
Article Abstract:
A study examined the effects of market entry timing, mode of entry, market focus and location advantages on the financial performance and survival of multinational corporations in China. The first round of data was provided by 924 MNCs in 1993 and the second was gathered from 859 MNCs in 1994. Findings revealed that multinationals launching their Chinese production in an earlier year had greater profitability than those that started in a later time. The results also showed that equity joint ventures were more profitable than cooperative operations or wholly foreign-owned subsidiaries. Finally, multinationals with locations in Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin and in the open coastal cities were more profitable than those found in the special economic zones. As for market focus, more than two-thirds of the multinationals with over 15% profit were able to sell over 60% of their products in China.

Choice and determinism: a test of Hrebiniak and Joyce's framework on strategy-environment fit
Article Abstract:
Hrebiniak and Joyce's model of business-environment relations is empirically tested. Hrebiniak and Joyce's model defines managerial choice and environmental determinism as orthogonal allowing management and the environment to be both weak or both powerful, while previous research has limited them to a zero-sum relationship. Data was collected from 146 firms in 52 manufacturing industries. The results provide partial support for Hrebiniak and Joyce's thesis.
