Photofinishing labs are facing several new opportunities, especially in digital imaging, according to marketing experts at the 2000 Photo Marketing Association convention. Investing in a digital minilab can have an immediate impact on a lab's operations in terms of automation and quality for small-format work. Labs, however, need to be prudent in choosing which equipment to purchase.

After 28 years, Color Detroit closes its doors
Article Abstract:
Color Detroit, a 28-yr-old commercial laboratory based in Detroit, MI, closed its doors after being acquired by Copy Craft Digital and Photographic Services. Color Detroit President Brian Obidzinski and his mother, Florence, decided to sell the business because of a number of reasons, including the large investment capital needed to maintain the business. The death of Brian's father and company founder, Henry Obidzinski, in 1998 as well a rising property values in Detroit contributed to Color Detroit's sale.

Fitting digital processes into the lab workflow
Article Abstract:
Photofinishing labs have been steadily increasing their digital offerings in response to customer demands for rapid turnaround time. The switch to digital not only has been a learning experience for the labs, but for the customers as well. Lab managers said customer education has been a constant challenge, as customers have the tendency to make unrealistic expectations or may not know how to properly submit a file.
