Forget the feel-good, we want dosh
Article Abstract:
Different groups of people measure corporate performance in different ways, but shareholders are mainly interested in whether companies can provide them with good returns. Companies can achieve good returns over the short-term but longer term performance is more difficult. Using returns for capital employed as a measure, most quoted companies appear to perform adequately. Gloxo Wellcome performed well during the 1980s and British Biotech is performing well in the 1990s, according to one analyst.

Steady as she goes
Article Abstract:
Investors seeking an income may wish to take a low-risk approach. There are a number of cash-based investments which can offer both an income and low risk levels. National Savings products are popular and they include the Ordinary Account. The interest is tax-free, but building societies and banks can offer higher levels of interest, and tax on savings has fallen to 20% after April 1996. Cash unit trusts are another option, and older investors may find annuities attractive.
