France's single currency dilemma
Article Abstract:
European monetary union (Emu) has become an election issue in France where further reductions in government spending may be needed if France is to take part in Emu. There appears to be a possibility for countries to inflate their economies after the decision in 1998 on who is to join the project. The exchange rate will not be decided until 1999. This may be avoided if the timetable id changes and the rate of exchange is announced in 1998. Such a move would mean a long-term commitment to austerity in France.
