European monetary union could be affected by currency speculation involving European currencies prior to their conversion to euros in Jan 1999. Central banks are better able to withstand currency speculation than was the case in 1992, when the European exchange rate mechanism collapsed. Intervention should not be inflationary since the overall stock will not be affected. Asset price inflation could occur as a result of lower interest rates in Ireland, Spain and Italy, however.

Changes to the Pep rules announced in the November Budget mean an even wider choice of Peps with government issued fixed interest securities, which generally offer a higher yield that shares and share-based investments.
