From heroes to zeros
Article Abstract:
Business awards may be given for reasons such as a rapidly rising stock price which are not especially relevant over the long term. Companies may encounter problems shortly after receiving a business award, such as Business Post, awarded the Coopers and Lybrand award in 1998, and companies receiving the Guardian businessman of the year award for young entrepreneurs in the 1980s. The Sunday Telegraph Management Award and the Veuve Clicquot Businesswoman of the Year award have also been given to some companies that later encountered problems.

A fine feathered fantasy
Article Abstract:
The Ostrich Farming Corporation (OFC) is a company offering high returns to investors. The investments are not covered by regulation since they are sold in the form of ostriches. Investors are asked to purchase ostriches for 14,000 pounds sterling each, with chicks bought by the company for 500 pounds each. Other ostrich farmers dispute values given by the company for carcasses and chicks. The managing director of OFC has previously been involved in business ventures that have failed.

Top accountant in 2.4 million pounds sterling pay-out to shareholders
Article Abstract:
Allied Provincial Stockbrokers and Arthur Anderson are to make a 2.4 million pounds sterling payout to private stockholders and Hermes relating to stock flotation. The flotation of Diamond Group on the Unlisted Securities Market in 1989 was followed by suspension of the company's stocks and the sale of its main business. Arthur Andersen has not admitted liability and sees the payout as a commercial decision due to the rising costs of legal action by Hermes.
