Fund revolution
Article Abstract:
European mutual funds are likely to increase in importance, according to Salomon Smith Barney. New inflows into European mutual funds appear to be firected to equities rather than bond funds. Deposits are becoming less attractive due to low interest rates and this means that equities are likely to be more attractive. As an equity culture develops in Europe, companies will be able to raise equity finance more easily, which will aid venture capital companies as well as business start-ups.

European funds are doing well
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom investors can choose from 132 unit trusts geared to Europe, and trusts specialising in Europe have performed well in 1997. Investors could benefit from corporate restructuring and companies that restructure are not likely to be opposed by governments. There are risks for investors, however, from planned European monetary union, since if this goes off course the trend toward convergence could be reversed. For this reason some funds have avoided investing in Italy.
