TeleWest: wrong numbers
Article Abstract:
TeleWest Communications is a cable operator which does not expect positive returns before 2000. The company faces a major rival in telephony which is its chief growth area. British Telecom may enter cable broadcasts after 1998 if a Labor government is elected. TeleWest holds 31 franchises involving 4.1 million households. There should be 420,000 subscriber homes by the end of 1995. Some 50% of these will need to be connected to TV before the company can break even.

General Cable: nice but awful
Article Abstract:
General Cable is performing well in terms of the sector in the UK, but the sector as a whole is experiencing problems. General Cable is forecast to achieve a profit from 2001, but the company's market share will have to increase for this to be achieved, and competitors have more to spend on marketing. General Cable could become a bid target but could mean a share exchange which may not bring major advantages for the company's stockholders.
