Getting the Facts for Local Authorities
Article Abstract:
The Audit Commission in its special studies program plans to examine local programs in order to assist local authorities in securing better value for money (VFM). They will identify specific improvements to cut inefficiency in a report useable by local authorities. Areas with the most potential for improvement in value for money will be identified. Scheduled for audit in late autumn 1984 are: non-teaching costs in schools, social services for children in care, mentally handicapped and elderly, vehicle fleet maintenance, and housing and property management. Locals will be involved and consulted.

Personal computing is a powerful tool for accountants when their use is well-planned and directed. The style of their use is flexible and direct. The accountant should use the computer professional, not invade his domain or isolate himself. The accountant's skills are enhanced with their use because they maximize time for analysis and interpretation. The spreadsheet model is simple and versatile and requires minimal, but necessary training to use. A table listing spreadsheet uses for local authorities and examples are included.

Health chiefs appeal for local government links
Article Abstract:
Great Britain's National Association of Health Authorities and Trusts asked the country's Department of Environment to more closely coordinate the efforts of both local councils and health authorities in the implementation of health policies related to child care and public health. The group specifically called for the alignment of the two agencies either under one authority or as a combined entity.
