Gloves are off in the mega-bids battles
Article Abstract:
The investment banking industry is anticipating a further round of restructuring as the market becomes more competitive and corporate acquisitions and merger activity lessens. Many investment banks have become involved in integrated or semi-integrated strategies led by the general trend for companies to become less beholden to advisers. Intermediaries, including investment banks, are beginning to adapt their strategies to fit different markets in a bid to retain clients and extract as much business as possible, but clients are beginning to seek financing advice from other sources.

SG Warburg: backing out of Eurobonds
Article Abstract:
SG Warburg is shedding 180 staff and leaving the Eurobond market. The merchant bank will then concentrate on fund management, corporate finance, and equities. This move undermines attempts to compete with US companies such as Merrill Lynch. The move will save Warburg an annual 25 million pounds sterling, and will also release a 125 million pounds capital gain. Warburg has stated that performance in this market has caused problems for the 5 years to 1995. Warburg may also carry out a restructuring.
