Gold-diggers
Article Abstract:
UK investors may find old share certificates and wish to carry out research to see if they are valuable. Stockbrokers may know what has become of the company, or Companies House may provide a record since its archives go back to the 18th century. There are also specialist firms that can carry out research. One such firm is Shareholder Investment Research from London, England. The company was asked to trace Baird Television for an investor with shares issued in 1931, and was able to link this company to Rank Radio and Television.

Check that your watchdog is on duty
Article Abstract:
Financial services regulation may not cover all investment activities in the United Kingdom, and investors can lose capital without compensation. This was the case of Andrew Hilbert who invested 10,000 pounds sterling using advice from London Currency exchange, and was left with 143 pounds sterling. The watchdogs did not cover the company's activities when he invested in 1996, though the law has since been changed and such trading is covered in 1998.

HIP ways to increase your income
Article Abstract:
Home-income plans allow income to be obtained by mortgaging homes and mis-selling of such plans in the 1980s resulted in compensation payments for some investors. These plans are becoming popular again in 1996. The new schemes offer a guarantee that the investor's home will not be at risk. Investors can either mortgage or sell a part of their homes, using the sum to provide an income. These schemes may be costly and annuities may offer better value.
