Government acts to help small companies
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom Paymaster General, Geoffrey Robinson, is studying how to reduce the burden of taxes and regulations on smaller quoted firms by setting up a working group on the issue. A report is to be published in Oct 1998, and parts of the report could be included in the UK Budget for 1999. Two key issues are to be examined by the group: relief on corporation tax, and improving liquidity in smaller companies by encouraging investment. The UK has 2,100 smaller quoted companies paying some 3 billion pounds sterling total corporation tax.

Salad days for smaller companies?
Article Abstract:
Nearly 90% of companies in the FTSE All-Share index are smaller firms. Smaller firms were seen as those under the biggest 350 quoted shares from the FTSE SmallCap index. Meanwhile, big companies have grown though acquisitions and mergers, and the index has grown smaller relative to the total market. Larger companies have tended to perform better in terms of stock price, and fund management has undergone consolidation, which means that larger firms tend to be favored for investments.
