Half-year report for the class of '96
Article Abstract:
Four shares from ten tipped to succeed in 1996 have performed well enough in 1st half 1996 to make up for the falls of the other six shares. Cairn Energy has performed especially well with shares at 3.02 pounds sterling compared with 1.22 pounds sterling on Jan 5 1996. Airtours, Wescol and Capital Radio have also performed well. Abacus Polar has proved to be a disappointment due to a surplus in the semiconductor market, and Pilkington has been hit by a drop in glass prices.

Further value to come from Cairn's shell
Article Abstract:
Cairn Energy saw a rise in its stock price until April 1997 when an agreement with Shell was announced and the price fell. Shell has purchased half the company's Bangaldesh gas business. There have been large gas finds in Bangladesh and Shell gives financial strength, especially if a pipeline is to be built to India. Cairn still has a high stock price, despite the fall, but it has an excellent management record and core assets which leave the price at a premium.
