Relation between the medial axis of the foot outline and 3-D foot shape
Article Abstract:
Pronated flat foot and standard type foot are the two most contrasting variations of three dimensional (3-D) foot shape. The posterior flexion angle (PFA) of medial axis is related to the three-dimensional foot shape. The standard type foot is characterized by well-developed plantar arch and straight foot axis. However, it is rare among the general population. Pronated flat foot has larger PFA. Shoe manufacturers can improve shoe quality by incorporating the features of a pronated foot.

Analysis of foot shape variation based on the medial axis of foot outline
Article Abstract:
The measurement of the medial axis of a foot outline can by itself provide much information for use in morphological analysis. A group of 443 men and 297 women had the medial axis of their foot outline measured, and results were compared to their actual feet. The medial axis was found to be useful in identifying dorsal arch height, foot pronation, and the overhang of navicular bones, among other things.

Automatic calculation of the medial axis of foot outline and its flexion angles
Article Abstract:
An automatic method of calculating medial axis of foot outline and its flexion angles was developed to improve the reproducibility of the medial axis and its flexion angles, to decrease personal errors caused by manual operation, and to save time and trouble in order in processing large amount of data. It was observed that flexion angle reproducibility improved with errors within 1 degree.
