Has PDFM turned the corner?

Phillips and Drew Fund Management (PDFM) has strongly outperformed the AFTSE All-Share index from April to Jun 1999, after underperforming in 1st qtr 1999. The company looks se to outperform the index for the whole of 1999, directors believe. Small firms account for 12% of PDFM's portfolio, compared to 4% average for funds. Cash accounts for 14% of PDFM's portfolio compared to 9% average for funds, since PDFM sees markets as overvalued. PDFM sees small and medium firms as likely to continue to perform well.

BESt Investment provides an annual 'Spot the Dog' guide where it identifies funds that have underperformed their benchmark index over the past three years, narrowing it down to funds where underperformance was greater than 10% over the three year period. Many fund management groups have reacted positively and have acted to improve their situation. There are five M&G funds in the UK Dog funds section, and Baillie Gifford British returned a 22.4% underperformance in the UK Small Companies dogs.
