High income over-hyped?
Article Abstract:
There is currently a lot of publicity surrounding personal equity plans (Peps) promising high incomes. However, high yield funds should be avoided by investors who want their investments to grow and do not need any income immediately, as in the case of these products the capital growth and the total investment return can be disappointing. Fixed interest, mostly corporate bond, funds which are being offered at present in advance of amendments to the Pep rules should also be regarded with some caution.

Investment set to boom: capacity constraints are building up in certain sections of the economy. This should lead to higher investment in manufacturing in particular, although it is other sectors that are generating the most cash
Article Abstract:
Manufacturing investment is expected to rise more strongly with profits increasing and corporate sector cash flow stronger. However research by BZW shows that the sectors that need to invest the most are not the ones generating most of the cash. The London Business School believes that investment levels during the current recovery are more or less in line with patterns observed in previous cycles. It predicts that average annual investment will grow 5.5% between the start of 1993 and 1997.

Cash, not tax
Article Abstract:
Investors seeking to purchase a personal equity plan (Pep) must decide between buying direct from a fund manager or through a broker. In most cases, unit trust managers will require any investment in their Peps to be put into their funds straight away, and investors could also be reluctant about committing themselves to a specific fund manager. It may be better to choose a self-select Pep, which can be obtained through a stockbroker.
